Impact stories at the Friday Night Community

What a blessing it was to join together at our ‘Gift of Giving’ Fundraiser this past Thursday.  It was a night full of laughter, beautiful stories and money raised for the Friday Night Community. And once again the ‘love army’ – a group of unbelievable volunteers – stepped up to make this magical night possible. The list is long but big thanks to Chef Olaf Mertens and team for the delicious meal, Susan Clark at Ettridges for transforming our space, the “FNC Band” for their beautiful music, co-hosts for the evening Jeff Weir and Lisa Bull, Jeremy Belanger for ensuring that all elements of sound and visuals flowed perfectly, Laura Buisman for her design expertise, our table servers – many of whom had never served before, the incredible clean-up crew, the hundreds of people who donated to our silent auction and the countless other volunteers who showed up to offer whatever help was needed – whenever it was needed.  We are so fortunate to have such a loving, giving and serving community.   Below I am attaching the Testimonial Videos that were played at the event for you to hear how Friday Night Community supports friends and changes lives.

‘A Life changing impact’ at the Friday Night Community

“Through Friday Night Community I have found a sense of peace and tranquility along with a social space where the volunteers’ smiles bring me hope, help me to get dinner and dessert for my children, and pray and uplift me. This is the best place to be on a Friday Evening; its more than a community.  Friday Night Community has become our family. Thanks to all the volunteers who come out every Friday to make a life changing impact on the lives of many.  I’m so very grateful for the pure in heart and the outpouring of love. Love Conquers all things, Love believes in all things, Love hopes all things, Love never fails. Friday Night Community volunteers…you are the epitome of the Agape Love of God!  God Bless You Volunteers!”

A big thank you to Port Nelson and their community for the donations of warm winter coats that we were able to provide for friends to keep warm this winter.   We are in need of larger and plus size coats for both men and women.

At the beginning of December we are having our free Ladies’ Brunch where over 80 women will come together for food, fellowship, crafts and a message about angels. We are collecting items to help make this a success including anything ‘angel’, white candles, clear glass candle holders, artificial snow, white fabric and white feathers.

We are in need of 3-4 more tables servers for the upcoming ‘Gift of Giving’ Fundraising dinner this coming Thursday from 5:15-9:30.  This would involve bringing food to tables and clearing the dishes after each course for our seated guests.  No experience is necessary and help will be provided.  Please let me know if you would like to join in the fun.

A sense of belonging at the Friday Night Community

We appreciate our many partnerships and the support we receive from within the community.  Burlington Food Bank’s Executive Director Robin Bailey commented, “As part of our regular intake one of the first recommendations we make is to go to the Friday Night Community.  The clients come back and let us know that the food is fantastic, but more importantly they feel cared for as people and that they have gained a sense of belonging.  This community is inclusive of all people regardless of any differences.”

We attribute this positive feedback and the sense of inclusivity that is felt to our amazing volunteers that go above and beyond in walking with and loving the friends that walk in the door.  They serve each week with such patience and care and are a true testimony to God’s love and acceptance.

Please spread the word that we have an urgent need for gently used winter coats, boots, snow pants and gloves of all sizes.  With the colder weather upon us, there are many who don’t have what they need to keep warm this winter.  Please drop off your clean winter wear at the church office from 9am-4pm.

Remembering together at the Friday Night Community

We gather every Friday to enjoy a meal, grow in friendship and share much needed resources.  This week we also took time to remember and reflect on the many blessings that we have thanks to the sacrifices of those who have gone before us. We remember the courage and sacrifice of those who served our country to give us freedom and peace.

We gave out hundreds of buns and loaves of bread from our end of day pick ups at the new COBS bakery on Fairview by Longos.  After spending the day sorting, bagging and passing all of the bread out, Len reflected: I can’t get a comment I heard tonight out of my mind. I handed a lady two loaves of bread and she turned to her son and said, “There you see God answered your prayer, we now have bread.”

Our 1st annual Gift of Giving Fundraiser which will take place on Thursday, Nov. 28 is now sold out. We are still looking for help on the day of the event with set up, clean up and serving.  Our silent auction donations are coming along nicely and we can still use items such as candy and treats, event tickets and gift cards. We can also use items to go with the following gift baskets: Salad Days Basket  -salad tongs/tossers, nice oil and/or dressing, fancy croutons, nuts/seeds Delicious Basket  -nice crackers, jams, spreads, chutney, pickles or antipasto Baby It’s Cold Outside Basket  -reading socks, scarf, mitts, boxes of teas and cocoa Feels Like Home Basket  -home decorating magazines, throw, coaster, candle
