The Things We Knew, by Catherine West

Catherine West creates a well drawn portrait of a family in crisis. Lynette Carlisle lives with her failing father in their Nantucket home. Her mother died when she was twelve and her four siblings have one by one left and never returned. All have blamed their father for their mother’s death but no one will talk about the tragic day. When her adolescent crush and neighbour Nicholas Cooper returns to work for his father he brings the past with him. Nick knows more about her mother’s death but will the truth pull his family further apart as well as his tenuous relationship with Lynette who he no longer thinks of as a kid.

Due to her father’s health and financial concerns the Carlisle siblings are lured home, secrets surface which threaten to separate the siblings forever or restore the now shattered pieces. They must navigate the storm that ensues making them question their faith, their willingness to forgive and the real truth of all the things they thought they knew. A poignant, smartly written and highly engaging novel!
