Yes! We believe in a God who loves and accepts everyone so we commit to honouring the value of all people, spanning any ability, disability, economic status, race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, sexuality, mental wellness, age, marital status, neurodiversity, or theological perspective.

We’re a Jesus-centred church which means we’re affirming and inclusive of everyone, justice and service oriented, and all about connecting with God and learning how to be more human and alive in the world. Totally ok! We’re a community full of people at different stages in the faith journey and who identify in all kinds of ways. Whether you’re building your faith for the first time or rebuilding it for the 10th time, everyone belongs here.

No. Generosity is a big practice of ours. We encourage everyone who calls WSUC ‘home,’ to be generous in ways that are meaningful to them. While we  offer a variety of ways to do that, we understand that’s not always possible, and encourage people to give in other ways like volunteering. If you’re just checking us out or unable to give financially, there’s no obligation or expectation to give.

We are a family friendly church and proud to offer spaces and programs that meet kids and youth where they are at and help them grow in their faith and connection to God. Kids and teens are also more than welcome to stay in church with the adults (even when they make noise and wander around). Find more info here on our kids and youth programs.

How is the church run, and who are you accountable to?

We’re a bottom-up organization, which means Wellington Square isn’t run by one minister, one staff team, or some mysterious person behind a curtain.

It’s run by people like you.

Our congregation elects leaders from within the community to oversee the life, finances, policies, and direction of the church. Our staff are entrusted to lead and do their work, but they work alongside and are accountable to those elected leaders.

We’re also part of the United Church of Canada, which gives us another important layer of accountability.

Being part of a larger denomination means we don’t get to simply make up our own rules when it comes to ethics, safety, or the use of power. There are established standards of conduct, policies, oversight, and formal processes for raising and responding to concerns.

Those systems exist because churches are communities where people place a lot of trust in one another, and especially in their leaders. We believe that trust should come with accountability.

No organization can promise that people will never make mistakes or cause harm. What we can promise is that leadership here is shared, power has checks on it, concerns can be raised beyond our own staff or local leadership, and there are structures in place to help keep people safe and hold leaders accountable.

For us, that isn’t just administration. It’s part of what it means to be a healthy community.
