justice and outreach

One of our core values is justice - the work of reconciliation and peace. Through learning and working, we’re active locally, nationally, and globally.

  • “If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor. If an elephant has its foot on the tail of a mouse, and you say that you are neutral, the mouse will not appreciate your neutrality.”

    Archbishop Desmond Tutu

  • “There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest.”

    Elie Wiesel

  • “Never forget that justice is what love looks like in public.”

    Cornel West

  • "But let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream!"

    the prophet Micah

community food program

The Community Food Program serves as a nutritional, social and spiritual lifeline to hundreds of people through our Friday Hub & Lunch as well as to isolated community members through our Emergency Delivery Program.

Every Friday we serve and feed 200+ people and approx 150 others through our emergency delivery program.

malawi

Since 2006, Wellington Square has been connected with partners on the ground in Malawi, Africa.

There are many opportunities for everyone to get involved through prayer, financial support, participating in fundraising events, creating blanket squares for children, as well as going on a mission trip to Malawi.

Wellington Square United Church has walked with Wellington Orphanage for over 19 years.

Each year we have provided help in some way.  In the past we have sent containers filled with food, medical supplies, clothing, bedding, educational supplies, sports equipment, carpentry tools, garden tools, bikes, and sewing machines etc. We have sent emergency funds during the medical crisis and employed a nurse. We have sent funds for repairing the buildings and even did a clean water project. Presently the church sends $2000 a month for food and medical care. God has given our Church, the great privilege of walking with this orphanage.

truth & reconciliation

In response to Jesus’ call to love our neighbours, God’s commitment to justice, and to the United Church of Canada’s role in the residential school system, we have made the commitment to honour the work of truth & reconciliation with our indigenous siblings.

While we don’t always know what that looks like, we know it means learning and unlearning, listening and understanding, and discovering what it means to be a friend, ally, and advocate of the indigenous peoples of Canada. Whether through book club, guest speakers, blanket exercises, or advocacy work, we invite you to join us on this important work.
